spent 3 weeks memorizing answers and still bombed the technical screen because i couldn't talk under pressure

i knew the answers. like, genuinely knew them cold. could write them out perfectly on paper. but the second the interviewer unmuted and asked the first behavioral question, my brain just... stalled.

this happened twice in the same month and i couldn't figure out what i was doing wrong. i'd prep with leetcode, read the job description 10 times, write out STAR examples for every possible question. then i'd get on the call and sound like i was reading a script for the first time.

the problem wasn't knowledge. it was that i'd never actually said any of it out loud under the specific pressure of someone waiting for me to respond in real time. there's this gap between knowing what to say and being able to say it smoothly when someone's evaluating you, and that's where i kept losing offers.

what actually fixed it for me was finding a tool that let me practice the experience, not just the content. used something called nxtinterview that runs mock interviews where it asks questions based on your resume and the role, and you have to answer live. not timed quizzes, actual back-and-forth like a real call. did maybe 6-7 sessions over two weeks and the difference was immediately obvious. my answers got tighter, i stopped overthinking mid-sentence, and i could actually think while talking instead of just reciting.

landed an offer last week at a company i really wanted, and the interview felt... normal. not easy, but i wasn't fighting my own brain the whole time.

if you're someone who preps hard but still feels shaky on calls, might be worth trying that kind of live practice format. made a bigger difference for me than any amount of solo prep ever did.
