i knew the STAR method cold. still blanked every single time in the actual interview.
i'd watch youtube videos, read articles, even wrote out my stories in a doc. but the second an interviewer asked 'tell me about a time you handled conflict,' my brain would just... freeze.
it happened three times in a row. same thing every interview. i'd prepare answers, know exactly what i wanted to say, then sit there stumbling over my words like i'd never worked a day in my life.
the problem wasn't that i didn't have stories. i had plenty. the problem was i'd never actually said them out loud under pressure. reading about the STAR method isn't the same as using it when someone's staring at you waiting for an answer.
i found this tool called nxtinterview that lets you do mock interviews with an ai that actually responds to what you say. not pre-recorded videos — it asks follow-ups, pushes back if your answer is vague, times you. i did maybe 6-7 sessions focusing on behavioral questions before my next interview.
what changed: i stopped overthinking mid-answer. i'd already practiced pivoting when i rambled too long or forgot a detail. my stories came out cleaner because i'd said them enough times that they felt natural instead of rehearsed.
landed an offer last week. not saying the tool did all the work, but practicing out loud instead of just in my head made a huge difference. if you keep freezing up even though you 'know' your answers, you probably just need reps under something that feels like real pressure.
(disclosure: just a user, not affiliated with the product or company. paid for it myself after the free trial.)
