had an interview in 4 days and talking to myself wasn't working

got a callback for a backend role tuesday afternoon, interview scheduled for saturday morning. i'd been out of practice for months and every time i tried rehearsing answers alone in my apartment i just felt ridiculous.

the problem wasn't that i didn't know my resume or couldn't explain my projects — it was that speaking them out loud to no one felt completely different than actually being asked follow-ups. i'd start strong then trail off because there was no pressure, no one judging my pauses or asking "can you be more specific about that?"

i tried recording myself on my phone but watching it back was just cringe without being useful. what i needed was something that felt like a real conversation.

ended up finding this tool called nxtinterview that basically runs you through mock interviews — asks questions, waits for you to respond out loud, then asks follow-ups based on what you say. not pre-recorded stuff, it actually listens and adapts. you can feed it your resume so it asks about your actual experience.

ran through two full sessions wednesday and thursday. first one was rough, stumbled through a "tell me about a time you handled conflict" question. second round i felt way more grounded. by friday i wasn't nervous about blanking anymore.

interview saturday went well. didn't get every question right but i didn't freeze, and that's what i needed. felt prepared in a way that solo practice never got me to.

full disclosure: i'm just someone who used this before an interview, not affiliated with them at all. but if you're in that same spot where rehearsing alone feels pointless, it's worth trying. helped me actually hear myself under something close to real conditions.

if you've got an interview coming up and the mirror method isn't cutting it, check out nxtinterview.com — it's free to try and you can do a full mock session in like 20 minutes.
