mock interviews with friends always turned into small talk. so i built something that wouldn't let that happen.

i was prepping for a senior engineer role last year and asked three different friends to mock interview me. every single one devolved into career advice, laughing about past jobs, or them going easy on me because we're friends.

the problem wasn't that they didn't care — it's that humans are bad at staying in character when you know someone. they'd start a technical question, i'd stumble, and instead of pressing me they'd say "yeah that's tough, honestly i don't think they'd ask that anyway." no pressure. no real feedback. just... talking.

i needed reps that actually felt like the real thing. someone who wouldn't let me off the hook. someone who'd pause and say "your answer was vague here, try again" instead of nodding politely.

so i built nxtinterview. it's a mock interview tool that runs you through real questions (behavioral, technical, resume-based) and actually critiques your answers. no fluff. it doesn't let you skip ahead or talk your way around a weak response. you record your answer, it gives you specific feedback on what landed and what didn't, and you can run it as many times as you want without feeling like you're bothering someone.

i built it for myself originally because i was tired of wasting friends' time and still walking into interviews underprepared. then i started using it before every interview and my answers got tighter. i stopped rambling. i knew what good pacing felt like.
