knew the STAR method cold. still blanked every single time in the actual interview.

i could explain situational questions perfectly on paper. then i'd get in the zoom room and my brain would just... stop.

happened three times in a row. i'd prep answers, write them out using STAR format, feel confident. then the interviewer would ask "tell me about a time you handled conflict" and i'd freeze for like 5 seconds, then ramble something incoherent.

the problem wasn't that i didn't have stories. i had plenty. it was the pressure. reading about behavioral questions is completely different from having someone stare at you waiting for an answer.

i tried recording myself on my phone but it felt pointless because i knew i could just redo it. no stakes. then i found this tool called nxtinterview that actually simulates the interview format — asks you questions in real-time, you have to answer on the spot, it transcribes and gives feedback on structure.

what helped most: you can't pause. you can't redo the answer mid-question. it forces you to think on your feet the same way a real interview does. i did maybe 6-7 mock sessions over two weeks, focusing on behavioral stuff.

last week i had a final round for a product manager role. when they asked the conflict question, i didn't freeze. i just started talking. didn't nail every answer but i actually sounded like a human instead of a buffering laptop.

still waiting to hear back but honestly just the fact that i didn't blank felt like a win.

if you know what to say but keep freezing when it matters, might be worth trying actual mock pressure instead of just writing answers down. worked for me.
