everyone grinds leetcode but nobody practices the actual conversation part of interviews

i've been interviewing engineers for years and kept noticing the same pattern: candidates who could solve hard problems would still fumble when asked to explain their thought process or talk through past work.

it hit me during a phone screen last year. the candidate solved the problem perfectly but couldn't articulate why they chose that approach. they froze when i asked a basic behavioral like "tell me about a time you disagreed with a teammate." super smart person, just never practiced the conversation itself.

i realized we spend hundreds of hours on leetcode and system design but almost zero structured time on the parts that actually happen in the room: explaining your reasoning out loud, answering behavioral questions without rambling, talking through your resume projects in a way that doesn't sound robotic.
